Bond Falls | Upper Peninsula of Michigan

January 27, 2020

Bond Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s a result of the Ontonagon River tumbling over fractured rock creating a series of small cascades and one larger waterfall. This place has been on my travel list for a while now and the other day I finally made it there!

Bond Falls is open year-round but is busiest during the summer months. If you’re interested in a winter visit, I would suggest keeping your eye on the weather and going right after a big snowfall. The combination of the rushing waterfall, the blue sky, and the snow-covered trees made it quite magical. It’s also less busy this time of year – I only saw a total of five other people!

When I arrived that morning, Bond Falls Road was plowed and easily accessible by car. I ended up parking in front of the Bond Falls Outpost building and walking across the street to the trail.

The trail leads you along the side of the river with numerous spots to take photos. In the winter, it’s a pretty narrow trail but it was packed down well. I would still recommend boots and snow pants though! There’s also a newly-constructed boardwalk at the bottom of the falls. Just beware – the trail can be very icy in the wintertime!
